A packed Room 103A at the SCSP AI+ Expo during the Building Applications with AI Coding Agents workshop

Recap

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the SCSP AI+ Expo for a hands-on session on building applications with AI coding agents. In 75 minutes, participants watched a live build of a data-visualization site from a Stanford social-network dataset, then used Claude Code on their own laptops to publish their own version live on the web.

What We Did

Participants experienced what AI coding agents can do — not by watching a slideshow, but by building something real themselves. No prior coding experience required.

1

Watched a Live Demo

Claude Code analyzed a real social network dataset — identifying communities, influential nodes, and patterns — all from natural language instructions.

2

Built & Deployed

Attendees used Claude Code on their own laptops to build an interactive web page with data visualizations, then deployed it live to the internet with GitHub Pages.

3

Left with a Live URL

Participants walked away with a published project they built themselves — a real URL they can share, plus the skills to keep building on their own.

SNAP Dataset

Stanford Network Analysis Platform — the social network dataset we'll analyze in the workshop.

GitHub Pages Docs

Learn how GitHub Pages works — we'll use it to deploy your project live on the web.

Quick Reference Guide

A one-page reference card with key commands and tips from the workshop.

Pre-event setup instructions (for reference)

These were the setup steps attendees completed before the session. Kept here so anyone watching the recording later can follow along.

1

Create a Workshop Folder

Create a new folder on your computer where we'll keep all the workshop files. This is just like creating any other folder.

  • On Mac: Open Finder, go to your Desktop, right-click and choose "New Folder", name it "scsp-workshop"
  • On Windows: Open File Explorer, go to your Desktop, right-click and choose "New > Folder", name it "scsp-workshop"
2

Download the Dataset

We'll be analyzing a social network dataset from Stanford University. It's publicly available research data — completely anonymized with no privacy concerns.

  • Click the link below to visit Stanford's dataset page
  • Look for the "facebook_combined.txt.gz" file and click to download it
  • Move the downloaded file into the "scsp-workshop" folder you just created

3

Create a Free GitHub Account

GitHub is a website where developers share and publish projects. During the workshop, we'll use it to put your project live on the internet — for free.

  • If you already have a GitHub account, you're all set — skip this step
  • If not, click the link below and sign up with your email address
  • Choose the free plan — that's all you need

You're Ready!

If you completed the steps above, you're all set. If you already have Claude Code on your laptop, bring it along. Otherwise, you can follow along with the live demonstration or pair up with a neighbor to try things hands-on.

  • Make sure your "scsp-workshop" folder is on your Desktop with the downloaded dataset inside
  • If you have a GitHub account: make sure you can log in
  • Don't worry if anything is confusing — we'll help you troubleshoot at the start of the session
